By getting a good vacuum reading (generally off of your vehicle's intake manifold), you can tell a lot about your engine's health. there are some great YouTube videos on how vacuum/vacuum gauges work, but here are some basics (engine idling and warm):-Most engines read between 16-22 inHg. This should be a steady reading once the engine is warmed up-A reading of 8-14 inHg that is steady could indicate a small vacuum leak, a slight timing issue, or poor compression-A reading of >22 inHG that is steady is most likely a timing issue-Small intermittent drops are caused by a problem with the valve spring or a sticky valveThis list isn't even close to being all inclusive and doesn't even go into non-idling vacuum diagnostics. There are plenty of online resources for more information.Bottom line is if you have the skills to at least change your own oil, you can benefit from using a vacuum gauge.This gauge kit is durable, comes in a great sturdy case, and has a large easy-to-read gauge face with a handy. I would recommend this to anyone with a rough running engine or a home hobbyist who likes to keep their car in top condition.

This is a well sorted and good value tool from OTC. It also comes with sensible fittings and a high quality fitted case. The gauge is nice and large, has a protective rubber covering, and a nice hanging hook. The main scale thankfully reads inches of mercury on the vacuum side and pounds per square inch on the pressure side (a smaller inner scale reads cm Hg vacuum, and kPa pressure). The gauge is fairly easy to read, the pointer zeroes well after use, and the readings seem to be both accurate and consistent.The blue dial with white scale is slightly off-putting but not really a problem, especially considering that some of the exact same OTC tools are being sold as big brand name tools like Mac only at much higher prices! The blue seems to be a feature of all the OTC dials. Chinese production does NOT make the tools inferior, but it does make them great value.Basic instructions (only) are pasted on the underside of the case lid. There is even a proper label on the outside of the case to describe the tool within, a nice touch. Don't buy acme branded rubbish when decent and very functional OTC gear is available at such good prices. A premium priced Snap On equivalent tool would work no better really... more important to know how to use one properly! An easy recommendation
