This electrolysis tester is great for demonstrating TDS (total dissolved solids) in two different samples of water. I used this to show those in the household the difference between the standard tap water (with whole house water filtration) as compared to our RO (reverse osmosis) filtered water.Just put the electrodes in the two different glass samples of water and turn it on for around 30 seconds and you will be able to see the heavy TDS in the tap water and clear in the pure RO water.A good tool to have in the water treatment tool box.

Honestly the danger this offers for the electricity offsets the neat feature of seeing the dissolved particles precipitate out of the water. Now if you are fine with something that can give you a shock when used and you are able to keep it away from pets, kids, and know yourself not to mess with it you can be fine. I always think about the "what if" scenarios personally. Again the risk vs reward is not great in my opinion for this one. It works, and for that I give it 3 stars.All in all I can't recommend for most people.

It is a little intimidating and feels like something for a science project. However, I tried it and it was so simple to use. I took two shallow glasses that were clean and added the distilled water in the one and the tap water in the other and it certainly changed the color of the one with the tap water. I believe it showed that it was safe to drink with just some rust and fluoride in it as expected. I was really impressed with my filtered tap water though that was almost as clear as the distilled water after testing it! It gives you a good idea at least and helped me feel better about my water that I'm drinking. I hope that helps!

Update: today I accidentally knocked a metal knife into this device, presumably between the FE and AL bars, and it set off a giant spark--and the device was TURNED OFF (but plugged in). I threw it away immediately. This thing is even more dangerous than the youtube guy thought.Original Review:There's a youtube video saying this is the most dangerous product on Amazon because it's easy to electrocute yourself with it. So, be aware of that, I guess.It seems to do what it claims (pretty simple science, to be fair). Make sure to do your research; having metals/minerals in your water is good, it's the amount that's the issue. If you look up the video I mentioned, you'll see it just turns the top part of his water a little yellow. And you can see what mine looks like.The problem is I wasn't able to test it on distilled water; I'll pick some up and do that soon. But, it's clearly separating the metals etc.And it did prove that the cheap Chinese filters I was using for my Pur faucet filter aren't doing anything.

Make sure you order the correct electrical suited for USA.This came with UK prongs and no adapter. Cannot use.

The media could not be loaded. This electrolysis tester uses two electrodes that pass electrical current between them. The result ends up separating metallic substances from the water, leaving a floating layer of color. The colors that are left behind indicate the types of metals that may be found in the water. There is nothing terribly scientific about it as it doesn't indicate necessarily laboratory levels or give you any kind of readings, but it's a quick way to distinguish a very pure water from tap water or even my softened water. The unit has four probes at the bottom, two each being inserted in a glass of water independently to compare side by side. Plug it in and it goes to work.
