Q: Why when you change batteries do you get a high pitch screech

yes but it may be the low battery warning.It also makes a noise adible to the human ear when activated and drives my gardener nuts and it eats batteries. I think this has been a bad buy. I have one of the smaller ones and that is good batteries are long lasting (9v) and I have had the unit for about 4 years changing the batteries about 3 times a year and it is still going strong

No, squirrels seem totally unphazed by these, even the ones with flashing lights. You need proper squirrel traps, which are humane if used correctly.

Q: Can I use rechargeable batteries in this as others run down very fast?

Not sure to be honest. I keep mine constantly plugged with the use of the power cable to an outside plug socket. I used to use non rechargable batteries but they drain very quickly. But once plugged in, it works perfectly fine. Worked well for a few years now.
