We've had this catflap now for nearly two years and it has been pretty good. The three way locking mechanism has been excellent for keeping the cats in when we want to or letting back in when we don't want them to get out again (like on a vet visit day).The magnetic function works well and ensures that it stays closed as the cats come and go (important in winter if you don't want the place to freeze).We have had some problems with robustness though. After about a year the magnet wasn't working too well. I contacted Staywell though and they were very good, sending me spare magnets and springs should I need them. I found it fairly easy to take the flap apart and replace the magnets and it went back to working ok. Recently though we found the lid had dropped and the flap no longer closed so I took it apart again and found one of the springs had gone. I used the replacement I had been sent and it's all good again.So overall I'd say it's a good flap, functions well but might not be the most robust out there if you've a couple of cats leaping through it several times a day. The product gets four stars Staywell themselves would get five stars for their excellent support.

One of my younger dogs hadn’t realised he’d grown too big to sneak through the existing Staywell catflap and completely obliterated it! I looked into replacing just the flap and magnetic strips but it was only £3 more to replace the entire cat flap. The new one came with instructions on how to dissemble the old cat flap and how to install the new one - I managed the whole procedure in about 10 minutes, much faster than I’d anticipated!I’ve had cats for almost forty years and recall only ever having used Staywell cat flaps, mostly because, with the development of the 4-way ones, they are efficient and do the job they’re designed to do at a very reasonable price. Including keeping a small dog outside! 😂

I've now bought five of these, so they have a good workout. I have cattery sheds outside and use them her and in my back door. The older model had a 'switch' that was rather easily turned, and the tab holding the flap shut was short enough that a really determined cat could break through it. These ones have a stiffer turning action and a larger lock tab. The magnet also seems stiffer and it took a while for some cats to work out that the flap was not locked. The four-way lock is a godsend, and allows me considerable flexibility when I haven't got time to run around catching cats.The downside is one that is really the same with all cat flaps: if it's locked a really determined cat can smash them off the door and break in or out. I've had tomcats break in through them, and my own stud cat objected to being shut into his house at night, and broke through his flap a similar way. He now has a custom wooden flap closed with a bolt. I've had some concerns with cats managing to break out of the flap and then getting trapped outside, particularly when it's cold, but this is solved by setting the switch to 'in but not out'.There is also a danger as with all standard flaps that a cat could get a tail or paw caught. There is only one make of flap that prevents this, and although I've had friends whose cats got trapped paws, I've never had this happen in 25 years of using flaps, and many cats going through them.

Easy to fit and works well but the cat that lives in the house won’t use it

The PetSafe Staywell Classic Cat Flap was very easy to install and worked well initially. However, within six months, our cats managed to break the door flap. After reading other reviews, it seems this is a fairly common issue. That said, it's not a particularly expensive item, so we decided to purchase a second one and give it another try. It does the job, but just be aware that you might end up replacing it sooner than expected. Still a decent option for the price.
