More story based so I felt it was good to place ourselves in their shoes but I'm wondering how much was borrowed from different eras and then generalized across all areas

A quick book to read but so interesting. What I liked was each hour was devoted to one person from the midwife to the grave robber and different stations in life.Rather that jump from one person to the other trying to tell all there stories together. I will certainly read others in this series.

Apart from lovers of Egyptian history this text would be a wonderful introduction to that ancient culture for any intending traveller. As the author reminds us, the remaining physical relics and monuments record the lives and accomplishments of the ruling classes as well as the prevailing spiritual and funerary beliefs. However, many of the illustrations on the walls of tombs depict the daily activities of ordinary people. This book brings those to life and it also combines them to create a compelling image of a working, interconnected society. The inclusion of factual records from ancient writings and from modern investigations adds to the credibility of the imaginary 24 hour day. The text is written in a straightforward style. Each chapter is embellished with hieroglyphs and illustrations pertinent to the occupation or lifestyle of the character being described. And each chapter links seemlessly to the next as the author invents a plausible narrative to show these characters' activities joining and overlapping each others' as they go about their daily lives. I wish that more history texts focussed more often on the lives of ordinary people and delivered information in such an entertaining and accessible way.
