Safe, effective blade

Love how the blade retracts automatically after the cut. Very safe.

good idea but not for medium or heavy use

After two days of use, it would not work, blade would not come out or the plastic slide would not fully retract.Got two of these and both failed, good idea but not for medium or heavy use.

This is a great product and basically the only utility knife I use

This is well engineered and I have done a lot of research into auto retracting safety knives. Mostly all of them will not retract if you are in contact with the button that extends the blade from the knife. There might be other manufacturers that do what this knife does, I didn't find to many, but it comes down to looks and personal preference. Once I saw the video on this knife, I immediately purchased it. Once the blade is extended and pressure in put on it, you hear a click, now the blade will auto retract when lifted off of the cutting surface even if you are preventing the blade extending button from returning to its original closed position. It would be very difficult to cut yourself with this blade. Take a look at videos of razor knife injuries, it's graphic. After cutting myself with a normal utility knife, why would I want take the chance with normal utility knives again. I still own normal utility knives and I could have been more careful in preventing the injury ,yes, but accidents happen. I learned a valuable lesson in safety from that injury. This is a great product and basically the only utility knife I use!

Does not last.

This is the best self retracting knife I've found which my job allows but it starts to get real sensitive on the blade retracting by itself, after a month its no longer usable. I bought 3 different ones and all wore out after about a month.

Good...when it works

This knife works well...some of the time. However, at least half of the time the "safety" mechanism causes the blade to retract in the middle of a cut. Whenever pressure on the blade is reduced, the blade retracts. I found that this often happens when opening a carton (part way through the cut to open the tape sealing the two top flaps my hand may slow down a bit, and this relieves the pressure between the blade and the cut). It also sometimes happens when slicing the tape on the short sides, or when cutting the cardboard itself to make the carton smaller for recycling. When the blade retracts itself, it is necessary to release the thumb slide to reset the mechanism, and then push the thumb slide forward to push out the blade again. So opening a carton becomes several steps: (1) Push thumb slider to extract the blade. (2) Begin slicing the tape on the carton. (3) OOPS! The blade retracts itself. (4) Release the thumb slider to reset the knife. (5) Repeat from Step (1).I replaced this knife with a much simpler one that is essentially just a plastic housing with a thumb slider, and a sliding blade that is attached to a spring that's connected to the housing. As long as I hold the thumb slider in the "blade is out" position, the blade remains out whether I'm actually slicing a carton or just holding the knife without any pressure on the blade. I can start and stop my cut as often as I want, and the blade remains out. When I release the thumb slider, the blade immediately retracts into the housing. It's just as safe as the Wiss WKAR1 without the inconvenience.

Safety First!

We use a box cutter to open packages all the time at home. The problem is we often leave it open on the counter. Not good.I read about these auto retracting devices in a gadget magazine so had to have a couple. It does work but its not without its issues.Basically, you must slide the blade out as you normally would with a utility knife. But in this case, you must hold the blade forward which I was not expecting. As soon as you lift the blade, it retracts whether you let go of the slider or not. While not perfect, I would buy this again.

Safety feature works well every time. I think this blade is perfect for a knucklehead like me who cut himself accidently! Thanks again for a great product at a reasonable price

Bought it as a safety box cutter. The blade can even auto retract once cut to the end of box. It appears the knife can sense the sudden lost of pressure on the blade and then retracting of the blade. Exactly what I want for a safety box cutter. I can see this probably won't a good fit for a contractor's utility knife which needs a stable blade all the time. However it is perfect for a box cutter.
