Laszlo Moholy-Nagy: Painting, Photography, Film (Bauhausbücher): Bauhausbücher 8

classic work in a new translation - highly recommended
An English language version based on the original 1925 edition, this recently translated work is an effortless read which conveys Moholy’s infectious enthusiasm for the potential of the photographic medium in the modern age. The editors have kept his experimental typography and the range of photography drawn on as a showcase for the new vision is of a good quality. An art or photography historian might well disagree with Moholy’s assertion that photography had, with a few exceptions, been purely derivative of painting until the 1920s. What makes his manifesto cum photobook still relevant today are the dazzling ideas he throws out in just a few pages - many only to be realised decades later in the post-war period. This certainly needs to be consulted by any student of the history of art/photography.
