NES Omnibus: The Nintendo Entertainment System and Its Games, Volume 1 (A-L)

This is a truly excellent book. In full disclosure, I’m one of a number of contributing writers to it. But lest this seem like a biased review, my contributions added up to perhaps 1% of the book (if even that), and had I never written them, I still would have loved the other 99% of it, just being an old school Nintendo fan who enjoys reading about the games I loved as a kid. Brett covers every game for the NES in alphabetical order from A-L (the book would have been too large had all games been included, so M-Z is in a forthcoming Volume 2), and includes voluminous details about each title, plus reviews, screenshots and more. It’s all fascinating stuff, even the sections about ultra-familiar games like Contra and Castlevania, and drew me in so quickly that I literally read it cover to cover the first day Brett handed me a copy. (And then I bought more copies on Amazon to give to family and friends.) There are many retrospective video game books out there these days, including other comprehensive NES tomes such as those by Chris Scullion and Pat Contri, both of which I also enjoyed. But Brett’s book goes into much greater detail on each game than these, and while the coffee-table size and price may not be for everyone, I think fans of the NES, and classic video games in general, will find it well worth their while.

If you love games enough to read a page or two about each and you don’t mind reading about a bunch of games you’d never play this book is for you. It’s also a good way to discover some treasures you missed and read about the ones you didn’t.

Brett Weiss has been writing amazing Video Game compendiums for years. Ever since I stumbled upon his SNES Omnibus, I have been a fan. This one does NOT dissapoint! I like to read these kinds of books cover to cover, and Weiss fills this with interesting reviews, anecdotes and facts on every game in the NES Library (in this case A - L). The quality of the hardcover is great and everything is nicely laid out. I can't wait for the next volume coming in 2021. I also suggest that anyone interested in video game history or collecting check out his other books.

My husband really enjoys the NES Omnibus Vol 1 (for $37), Loves the layout and use of space. It's fun to thumb through. He has read several various pages and feels the writing, info, shared experiences, etc is good as well.
