Constance Wu and Michelle Yeoh enter into a battle of wills
Crazy Rich Asians starts with two scenes that set up the entire plot. First, Michelle Yeoh gets disrespected by the racist staff at a hotel who then find out she is the new owner. Then Constance Wu tells her college class that when people play for something they really value they make bad decisions because they play not to lose. These two women enter into a battle of wills when Wu wants to marry Yeoh’s son Henry Golding. Yeoh is rich and powerful and used to getting her way like at the hotel, while Wu understands people’s psychology that they will make irrational decisions when it really matters. This sets up the fantastic romantic comedy that is Crazy Rich Asians. Wu is posited as the underdog as she not only has to go up against Yeoh but seemingly all of Singapore who thinks Wu is an upstart trying to bag a rich man. The women especially take pettiness to a whole other level. Amongst the drama there’s plenty of comedy as well. Awkwafina who plays Wu’s friend is especially funny. She’s helped out by Ken Jeong who plays Awkwafina’s dad. Even Awkwafina’s nerdy brother gets his moments awkwardly trying to talk to Wu. It’s all a great mix.

Not recommended by me.
I purchased this for my wife. It is a very ordinary film. It tries to be funny in a 12-year old schoolboy or girl kind of way but misses the mark.
